A gallery piece for Light Grey Art Lab’s group show “Calamity: Hexes, Prophecies, and Plagues.”
Some background information behind the image:
When an octopus lays its eggs, she transforms into an incredibly protective mother. During this period of time of about 5 months, she ceases to consume any food source so that she may remain attentive and constantly vigilant in protecting her offspring. Shortly after her eggs hatch, she dies.
I’ve been reflecting on the meaning of sacrifice after my son was born last year and what that feels like. This piece is a representation of the struggle to find how to relate to that sense of self-sacrifice that comes with the nurturing and caring for others who depend on you.
